Tony Oxendine
South Carolina

One of the most popular and sought after callers in the world, Tony was introduced to square dancing in 1972 through a teenage square dance program sponsored by the local Parks and Recreation Department. With his musical background (singing professionally with a band for many years), and with his young analytical mind (majoring in both math and computer science at the University of South Carolina), he was quickly drawn into calling. Trying to balance his time between school, his band, and his fledgling calling career quickly proved to be too much. Since he found calling so much fun, he quit the band in order to be able to devote more time to school and calling. He quickly became very popular and soon found himself calling and teaching for five South Carolina clubs.

In 1974 Tony attended Promenade Hall Callers College in Indiana. There he first met his idol in the business – Dick Jones. Tony was so impressed with Dick that he “borrowed” much of his style and started using this new style in his own calling. Success quickly followed. Tony found himself calling all over the southeast. In 1980 Tony made the decision to go full-time with his calling. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Tony still travels extensively doing festivals, dances, and clinics all over the world. He has called in all 50 states as well as in Canada, Saudi Arabia, England, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Holland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, China, Japan, and Australia.

Tony joined CALLERLAB in 1978. Since that time he has served on and chaired numerous committees. He served several terms on the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee. He served as Chairman of the Board of CALLERLAB from 1994 – 1996. In 2000, Tony was presented with The Milestone Award – CALLERLAB’S highest honor.

Tony became an Accredited CALLERLAB Caller Coach in 1996, and since that time has conducted or taught in several full schools each year. Tony has shared his knowledge and experience both in his local area and at festivals and conventions all over the square dance world. He has developed skills in the presentation of singing calls and showmanship that are unmatched.

In 1986, he and his lifetime friend, Jerry Story formed Royal Records. Royal Records quickly became one of the premier square dance recording companies in the world. Today, with Tony at the helm, Royal Records remains a leader in the square dance recording industry.

In 2002, Tony, Jerry Story, Larry Letson, and Everette Curlee opened Pride RV Resort and launched Maggie Valley Square Dance Vacations in Maggie Valley, NC.

Tony has been married to his best friend, Kim, since 2017. Together, the two of them have spear-headed GSI/NSDC Callers School since 2007. Worldwide, with Tony at the helm, the GSI schools have taught more than 2500 callers.

However, If you really want to see him bubble with pride, just ask him about his five grandchildren – Bella, Sydney, Brielle, Emma, and Elsie (all girls)!!!!

Travis Cook
Kentucky

Travis Cook and his wife Dorothy live in Crestwood, KY – just outside Louisville. Travis started dancing around 2002 with the promise of great meals at dances and met Dorothy there just a few years later – she just couldn’t resist a blonde with a microphone! They both originally hail from the mountains of Eastern KY – Knott and Perry county, respectively.

Travis began calling shortly after learning to dance under the tutelage of Joe Lowe and became the club caller for the club in Hazard, KY, in 2004 until he left the mountains to attend the University of Louisville the following year. While not traveling much during his college years, Travis graduated in Fall 2010 and started calling actively again soon after. He was lucky enough to be mentored by Kenny Jarvis and Sparky Sparks in learning to dance and call Advanced and Challenge 1/2. Travis and Dorothy have two wonderful children who are now regular sights at local events – Thomas and Anna.

On top of a full time job in the healthcare technology sector, Travis is now blessed to travel all over the region calling through C1. He was honored to join the staff of Royal Records in 2021. Travis served as Vice Chairman – Squares for both the Evansville and Mobile National Square Dance Conventions and is proud to participate on the several conventions boards around the area.

Hunter Keller
Montana

Hunter had been around square dancing all of his life, having been dragged from dance to dance by his grandparents and parents. After the death of his grandfather – his hero – in 2002, Hunter decided that he wanted to do something that would always remind him of his grandfather, and decided to start taking square dance lessons in 2004. A mere six months later, with encouragement from the caller teaching him how to dance, George Moore, he picked up a microphone and began calling. He eventually would become the caller for four Billings clubs: the Magic Diamonds, the 59ers, the Hoedowners, and, in 2008, reviving the club his grandparents formed, the Checkerboard Squares.

Hunter called his first festival in July of 2007 in California. He has called in over 45 states while also traveling to Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and Taiwan to call. Hunter has been staff on square dance land and cruise vacations to various locations around the world as well.

In 2006, he became a member of Callerlab and is a member Callerlab Ways and Means Committee and the Callerlab Marketing Committee. Hunter is also past Callerlab Liaison for the State of Montana and is the past Chairman of the Callerlab Youth Committee.

In October of 2007, Hunter attended the 4Dance Caller’s Academy in Napa, California with Scot Byars as the instructor. In June of 2008, he also attended the Yellowstone Callers College in West Yellowstone, Montana with Tony Oxendine and Jerry Jestin as the instructors. Both of these callers colleges were made possible by the Bob Mace Memorial Fund. Bob Mace was a caller that Hunter grew up around when his parents and grandparents danced. Thank you to that fund for bettering callers.

In August of 2008, Hunter was honored with a chance to become a recording artist for Royal Records. He recorded his first song, Wild Horses by Garth Brooks (Hunter’s biggest musical influence), in October of that year and has since gone on to record over 25 square dance records.

In 2010, with the guidance of Larry and Susan Sperry, Hunter began to cue round dancing. Hunter currently cues through phase 4.

After the death of his grandmother, Shirley, in January of 2014, Hunter, along with the help of Grand Square Inc. (GSI), formed the Frank & Shirley Leenknecht Caller’s Scholarship Fund. Hunter believes that this fund will not only help preserve the memory of his grandparents, but also help callers, which is what Frank & Shirley loved to do. Whether it was putting them up at the house, setting up a dance, or cooking for them, his grandparents believed callers deserved the best treatment possible. This fund will continue to honor their memory and their wishes.

Hunter’s influences include, first and foremost, his grandparents, Frank & Shirley Leenknecht, his father and mother, Dave & Tina Keller, plus many renowned callers and cuers from around the world.

Hunter currently resides in Billings, Montana. He is a ten-year 4-H alumni, a former 4-H leader, and a former Jaycees Member. Hunter credits many life skills that he has learned throughout the past 15 years to 4-H and says that, if it were not for that program, he would not be where he is today.

Jack Pladdys
Ohio

Jack began calling in 1982 while serving as a member of the US Air Force. During an assignment at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan, he launched his calling career in his off duty time with two local clubs. Upon moving to Dayton, Ohio in 1983, he called regularly for an Advanced and three Plus clubs. It was in Ohio that Jack had the fortune of meeting Chuck & Bobbie Myers. Chuck became Jack’s “mentor” and helped him learn the craft of calling not only from the technical aspect but also from the importance of being a positive influence and striving to better the activity as a whole. Jack attributes his success and accomplishments 100% to the role modeling and teachings of Chuck & Bobbie.

Jack moved to Utah in 1989 where he again worked regularly for an Advanced and three Plus clubs. Jack retired from the Air Force in 1992 and relocated to Ohio. Together Jack & Sherry spend the week managing a very busy home program calling and teaching for two Plus clubs, an Advanced, and a C1 group. Jack has taught beginner lesson classes every year since he started calling. He believes the existence of Square Dancing is dependent upon all callers staying passionate about the activity and dedicated to always teaching new dancers every year.

Jack is an Accredited Caller Coach with CALLERLAB and the Central US Leader for Grand Square International, Inc., an organization focusing on the promotion and preservation of Square Dancing through caller education. He runs the Midwest Caller College, is a staff coach of the National Square Dance Convention GSI Caller schools, and conducts many caller training seminars in his travels.

Collectively, he & Sherry have six children and twelve grandchildren.

Jack has traveled and called extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, the Middle East, and Europe. He has been a featured caller for the World Convention in Austria, numerous state conventions, and the International Singles Convention in Canada. He has been a staff caller for Fontana resort in North Carolina and English Mountain resort in Tennessee, and currently on staff at Pride Resort in North Carolina. Jack and Sherry call for and administrate several weekends, festivals, and square dance cruises yearly including the Winter Fiesta (FL), the Winter Fest Caribbean Cruise, Smokin’ in Rail City (OH), August Gatlinburg Getaway (TN), and Spring Extravaganza (IN).

Jack is currently a staff recording artist with Royal Records and has recorded music with Chicago Country Records, Desert Recordings, and Gold Rush Records. He is a member of the Miami Valley Callers Association (MVCA), the Cincinnati Callers Association, and an Accredited Member of CALLERLAB. Justin Russell
Tennessee

Justin took lessons with his grandmother, mom, dad, and brother in 2003. Friends from church got him to come to that first beginner dance, but no one knew it would become his passion. In June 2003, Justin attended his first Caller School in Tyler, TX with Jon & Deborah Carroll-Jones, Vernon Jones, and Jerry Story.

Justin currently calls for Top Spinners in Eads and Pacer Promenaders in Martin, TN. He travels during the summer calling both Modern Square Dances as well as Beginner (Party Night) Dances. Justin is passionate about teaching new dancers about this wonderful activity!

In 2006, Justin spent the summer in Denver, CO calling for the Colorado Rocky Mountain Dancers, an exhibition group representing the Llyod Shaw era of dancing. During this time, Justin learned the valued history and tradition of this activity. He stills performs with the group when possible.

In 2008, Tony Oxendine and Jerry Story asked him to record for Royal Records. In October 2008, Justin went to a Nashville studio to record “Free Ride”.

Justin’s goal is to blend the tradition of square dancing with the twenty-first century.
